The genus Bacillus encompasses the Gram-positive sporeforming rod-shaped bacteria. This genus is used for the synthesis of a very wide range of important medical, agricultural, pharmaceutical and other industrial products. This includes a variety of antibiotics, enzymes, amino-acids, and sugars. Some of the Bacillus species play an important role in the biological control of insect pests. The genus Bacillus is phenotypically heterogeneous with members exhibiting an extremely wide range of nutritional requirements, growth conditions, metabolic diversity and DNA base compositions as reported in Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology.
