The term "literary anti-Semitism" is relatively new to academic discourse. There are now criteria that determine what constitutes anti-Semitic in Western literature. Such guidelines include accurate depiction of Jews or of any aspect of Jewish life in mainstream literature. As such, the portrayal of literary characters needs to be examined along with the narrative perspective. The historical time period is pertinent because what constitutes anti-Semitism today may not have been regarded as such in earlier times.
